Tyree's Blog 3: Poetry festival
My senior year of high school I was on the verge of making a C in English. In order to get some extra credit to boost my grade up to a B, I volunteered to recite a poem in front of all the 1st period English classes. I wanted to choice a poem that was short enough to remember but long enough so that I would get the entire extra credit. So for the next two weeks leading up to the poetry festival, I looked for the perfect poem to recite. I also need to check with my teacher in order to get her approval to perform the poem. I remember in the days leading up to the presentation I wasn't very nervous. Although I hate public speaking and would prefer not to do so, I have no problem doing it if it's for a grade especially for bonus points. I decided to recite to poem, "And did Those Feet", by William Blake. Which also happens to be my mothers favorite poem. Surprisingly the whole experience was pretty fun, even though the extra credit I received wasn't enough to push me up to a B.

My dream ever since I was a kid was to attend Auburn University. But due to my low ACT score and grades my admission my denied. So I decided to come to AUM and then I was invited into a program called Auburn Guarantee. All members of the program live together on the 8th floor of North Commons. We also share the same class and hopefully in a year we will be attending Auburn University. Back in high school everyone for the most part was involved in sport, club, or group. I decided to join the cross country team. There was only a small number of us and most of the other student didn't even know what cross country was or just weren't interested. The one thing a lot of the guys complained about was the fact that the entire school seemed to care at all about the team and the football players all ways got the attention. I never became so emotionally invested in the sport to really care, I just wanted the season to be over. I am vey interested in politic and our economy. I was so excited when I registered to vote. I consider myself to be an independent. These days people seem to think they only have two choice; democrat or republican. It's very rare for an independent to gain any sort of attention in the news. Its interesting to be an independent because you get to see things from both sides point of view. It's not as limiting and becoming an independent has made me feel more open minded.

During my sophomore year of high school we had a class reading of the book "Animal Book" by George Orwell. Which is a novel that reflects the events that eventually caused the Russian Revolution in 1917. It also reflects the time in history when Joseph Stalin was in power of the Soviet Union. Today it is one of my favorite books that I have read multiple time. For most high school students, being given a class reading seems terrible. "Animal Farm" really taught me more about how small group of individuals can influence entire community. After reading this book George Orwell became one of my favorite authors. I went on to read his books "1984" and "Coming Up for Air".
